An average 85% of UK adults use the BBC each week, spending 6hr26min watching BBC TV/iPlayer. In 2023-24, there were 23.9 million TV licences in force at the end of the year, around 775,000 of which were free licences for those aged over 75. In 2023, the value of the TV licence fee was frozen between 2022-24, before increasing to £169.50 from April ’24.
The PAC’s 2021 report on BBC strategic financial management warned that the BBC had ducked hard choices and failed to shore up its financial plan for the future. Its 2023 report on BBC Digital found that the BBC was stuck in the TV and radio era, without the resources to compete in the global market or on content.
The National Audit Office (NAO) publishes in 2025 its audit of the BBC’s TV Licence Fee Trust Statement 2024-25, which sets out the income collected from the fee. In 2023-24, the BBC collected approx. £3.6bn in net revenue from television licences (a fall of 2% compared to 2022-23).
The PAC will take evidence from senior officials at the BBC, including its Director General, as it scrutinises the BBC’s licence fee collection.
