The Royal Household set up the Buckingham Palace Reservicing programme in 2017, with the objectives of reducing the risks of fire and flood, and to deliver an enduring building infrastructure with a life expectancy of 50 years. Updates to the Palace’s essential services include electrical cabling, heating systems, new lifts, lavatories, and improved disabled access. The budget for the programme, agreed with HM Treasury, is £369m, funded through a temporary uplift to the Sovereign Grant and paid over 10 years from 2017.
The National Audit Office (NAO)’s study into the programme is assessing how well the Royal Household is delivering against its objectives including in relation to progress, management of risks, and the delivery of benefits.
Based on the NAO‘s work, the Committee will take evidence from senior officials from the Royal Household and HM Treasury, with likely topics including whether lessons can be taken for the Restoration and Renewal of the Palace of Westminster, another heritage programme scrutinised by the Committee.
