Stormont reform: MPs to question leaders and senior figures from political parties in Northern Ireland

Leaders and other senior figures from political parties in Northern Ireland will appear before MPs in a session exploring options for reform of the NI Executive and Assembly.

Various proposals for institutional reforms at Stormont have been put forward in recent years, and the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee will discuss the ideas and the overall case for reform with representatives from the SDLP, Alliance Party, UUP and DUP.

There could be questions on how the relationship between the parties and ministers on the Executive affects the legislative agenda, the nomination process for the First and deputy First Ministers, the benefits of reforming the process for electing the Speaker, and cross-community voting  in the Assembly.

The session will also explore the role of the UK Government in convening the parties and facilitating discussion about Stormont reform.
