Economic growth in Northern Ireland: MPs to examine challenges and opportunities in manufacturing, energy and creative sectors

The Northern Ireland Affairs Committee resumes its economic growth inquiry with a session examining the opportunities and challenges in some of the key sectors driving growth in the NI economy.

The first half of the hearing will focus on the advanced manufacturing sector, which has been identified by the UK Government as the focus of its Enhanced Investment Zone. The committee will then hear from representatives of the creative and energy sectors.

Witnesses are likely to be asked about their views on the Industrial Strategy sector plans as well as how well the UK Government coordinates economic policy with the NI Executive. There could also be questions on the challenges the sectors face when it comes to skills and infrastructure and the ongoing impact of the Windsor Framework and post-Brexit trading arrangements.

Following the first part of the committee’s inquiry, a report published in March called for the UK Government to ensure its economic strategy for Northern Ireland was aligned with that of the NI Executive. It also recommended greater support for small and medium-sized enterprises and a commitment to fund investment in skills and infrastructure.
