Lord Vallance on Britain's nuclear energy future
The Government has taken significant steps to advance the delivery of new nuclear power as part of the UK’s clean energy ambitions.
These include confirming a final investment decision for Sizewell C, selecting Rolls-Royce as the preferred bidder to develop Small Modular Reactors, concluding the work of the Nuclear Regulatory Taskforce and accepting its recommendations in full, and publishing the Advanced Nuclear Framework to support the development of new technologies.
The Government has not, however, formally committed to its predecessor’s Civil Nuclear: Roadmap to 2050, which set out ambitions for expanding nuclear capacity over the coming decades.
In this final session of its inquiry Revisiting the nuclear roadmap, the Committee will ask Lord Vallance, Minister for Science, Innovation, Research and Nuclear to set out the government’s strategy for meeting the UK’s nuclear energy needs.
