Are youth custody settings working? - MPs to hear the evidence
The Justice Committee will question senior representatives from a Young Offender Institution, Secure Training Centre and Secure Children’s Home during the first evidence session of its inquiry into Children and young adults in the secure estate.
Meeting details
MPs on the cross-party committee, chaired by Labour MP Andy Slaughter, will explore whether the current mix of custodial settings are fit for purpose in meeting the welfare and rehabilitative needs of children in the secure estate.
Discussion is likely to focus on how these different settings manage a demographic with increasingly complex needs such as trauma, poor mental health, self-harm and special educational needs.
The session will examine topics including remand, family contact, violence, safety and disorder, as well as education and training. It will also cover the transition from the youth estate to the adult estate for young adults aged 18 and over.
