MPs to examine Iran war’s impact on Northern Ireland’s energy costs
The Northern Ireland Affairs Committee will hold an evidence session examining the fuel and energy challenges faced in Northern Ireland resulting from the outbreak of the Iran war.
With just under two thirds of households using oil as their primary heating source, the session will focus on the social and economic impacts of the energy price spike and whether Government, Executive and other sources of support are adequate to mitigate its effects.
In the first panel, MPs will hear from representative bodies for oil distributors, road haulage operators and farmers. The Committee is likely to ask about the energy challenges faced in their respective industries, as well as their experience of the support provided so far and what else, if anything, should be done.
In the second panel, MPs will question the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland, Utility Regulator and National Energy Action NI. The Committee may explore whether further steps could be taken to ensure Northern Ireland is more resilient to future energy price shocks.
