Nuclear energy regulators and ‘enablers’ face ESNZ questions on delivering the UK’s nuclear ambitions
On Wednesday 22 April the Committee holds the fourth evidence hearing in its inquiry examining the Government’s ambitions for nuclear in UK energy strategy and how it intends to deliver them.
Across two panels the Committee will assess the effectiveness of the UK’s nuclear regulators and the organisations - like GB Energy-Nuclear and the UK National Nuclear Laboratory – charged with enabling and driving the UK’s nuclear energy ambitions.
As governments around the world grapple with a major new fossil fuel crisis, there is renewed focus on nuclear energy’s potential to deliver the “baseload” electricity and flexibility needed to guarantee supply during the transition to clean, renewable energy.
Meeting details
With evidence of unnecessary duplication and complication across regulatory bodies contributing to the sector’s infamous delays and increased costs, how will regulators respond to the Nuclear Regulatory Taskforce report?
And on the second panel, both GBE-N and the UKNNL are working in an incredibly complex technical and regulatory environment, but GB Energy is a new organisation and UKNNL lacks experience in the operational components of the nuclear industry. How quickly, effectively and efficiently can they work towards the government’s nuclear ambition?
