MPs to explore the role of probation in rehabilitation
The Justice Committee will hear from HM Chief Inspector of Probation Martin Jones and HM Prison and Probation Service representatives during the third evidence session of the second part of its inquiry into rehabilitation and resettlement: ending the cycle of reoffending.
Meeting details
MPs will examine the Probation Service’s role in promoting rehabilitation and resettlement to reduce reoffending. The cross-party committee, chaired by Labour MP Andy Slaughter, will discuss the opportunities and challenges faced by the service with three regional probation directors.
During the second panel, MPs will hear from the Chief Inspector of Probation on the service’s performance in relation to rehabilitation. Discussion is likely to focus on the issues of recall, the Sentencing Act and reforms to probation delivery.
The Committee’s first report of this inquiry focusing on rehabilitation in prisons, published in November, concluded prison overcrowding, staffing shortages and deteriorating infrastructure is having a ‘profound impact on the ability of prisons to deliver rehabilitation’.
