Policing and security in Northern Ireland: MPs to question Northern Ireland Policing Board
The Northern Ireland Affairs Committee continues its policing and security inquiry by questioning the Chair, Vice Chair and Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Policing Board.
As the independent body responsible for policing oversight in Northern Ireland, the board supervises and scrutinises the work of the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Questions are likely to focus on the Board’s views on the performance of the PSNI, as well as issues relating to funding, officer numbers and tackling paramilitarism.
MPs are also likely to explore with the panel the findings of the Independent Review of the Policing Board, which was published in January 2025 and made several recommendations related to improving the effectiveness of the body.
Meeting details
The Committee’s inquiry is looking at the extent to which the objectives and aspirations of the 1999 Patten Review on policing – which recommended the establishment of the PSNI - have been realised. It is examining issues relating to police funding, recruitment, security, cross-border collaboration and paramilitary disbandment.
