MPs to quiz Minister and Climate Change Committee on EV transition
The Transport Committee will quiz Department for Transport Minister Keir Mather in the final session of its inquiry examining the transition to electric vehicles.
Meeting details
The Minister will appear alongside a director in the team working across Government to support the transition to zero emission vehicles. Elsewhere in the session, MPs will hear from senior figures at the Committee of Climate Change.
With the Government having said it will end the sale of new pure petrol and diesel cars by 2030, the Minister will be asked whether the EV transition is happening at the pace required.
He will also be pressed on the Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) scheme following criticisms that it is the right policy at the wrong time.
On top of this, Mather could face questions relating to the second-hand market, access to charging infrastructure and the disparity in VAT rates between home and public charging.
Witnesses from the Climate Change Committee will be asked about the rate of EV uptake and whether any further flexibilities in the Government's Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate would put achievement of climate targets at risk.
The session comes after the CCC’s 2025 progress report recommended measures to increase awareness of the benefits of EVs.
As Government looks ahead to the 2030 target to phase out the sale of new petrol and diesel-powered cars, with hybrids allowed until 2035, MPs could therefore also explore whether enough has been done to get the public on-side.
