The Northern Ireland Affairs Committee holds the first evidence session of its inquiry exploring the main challenges facing policing and security in NI, almost 25 years on from the establishment of the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

The session will hear from Dr Jonny Byrne, the independent reviewer of the powers set out in the Justice and Security (Northern Ireland) Act 2007, and former reviewer Prof. Marie Breen-Smyth.
The inquiry is looking at the extent to which the objectives and aspirations of the 1999 Patten Review on policing – which recommended the establishment of the PSNI - have been realised. It is examining issues relating to police funding, recruitment, security, cross-border collaboration and paramilitary disbandment.
