The Government has stated that it intends to pursue reform of the European Convention of Human Rights, arguing that the current interpretation of some articles has placed an unreasonable barrier on the Government’s ability to deliver asylum and immigration policy. The Committee will question the minister on how the Government plans to work with member nations of the Council of Europe to achieve reform to the ECHR. It will also examine the basis for the Government’s concerns about the interpretation of the right to respect for private and family life in UK courts and the impact this has on migration policy.

The session will also examine Government performance and planned reforms in a range of other areas including the youth justice system, and legislation including the Sentencing Bill and Hillsborough Law. Following reports of plans to limit the use of jury trials, the Committee will also question the minister on how the system would work and if it would ensure a fair trial.
