MPs to examine education and employment opportunities for Welsh prisoners
The Welsh Affairs Committee continues its inquiry into prisons, probation and rehabilitation in Wales, examining the quantity and quality of education and employment support available to Welsh prisoners.

HM Inspectorate of Prisons’ recent review raised concerns that many prisons across England and Wales are failing to reduce reoffending through purposeful activity. These concerns come amid significant cuts to prison education contracts in England, which may affect Welsh prisoners serving their sentence there.
In the first panel, MPs will question representatives from the Prisoners’ Education Trust, St Giles Trust, and the education and training inspectorate Estyn. The Committee will likely ask about the role education plays in rehabilitation, if current support is adequate, and how well services meet the needs of Welsh prisoners.
In the second panel, the Committee will hear from businesses operating prisoner training and recruitment schemes in Wales. MPs are likely to ask about the witnesses’ experience training and recruiting prisoners and ex-offenders, the challenges they face, and what the UK Government could do to address these challenges.
