How effective are Industrial Strategy measures likely to be in reducing the cost of energy for UK businesses?
This third session of the Committee’s major inquiry into the cost of energy will explore the impact of high energy prices on UK businesses and industry—particularly on the global competitiveness of UK manufacturing.
Earlier this year, in response to questions from Committee Chair Bill Esterson MP, Nissan executives revealed that the company’s Sunderland plant “pays more for its electricity than any other Nissan plant in the world.”
Meeting details
The first panel will examine support for large businesses and energy-intensive industries, focusing on recent Industrial Strategy measures, their funding, and practical implementation. Other issues to be considered include where energy policy costs should fall and the role of mechanisms such as Power Purchase Agreements.
The second panel will turn to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), addressing concerns around energy bill transparency and dispute resolution. It will also explore whether there is a case for introducing a business energy price cap, similar to the domestic market.
