Justice Committee to hold evidence session on the regulation of the legal professions
The Justice Committee will take evidence from legal regulators on Tuesday, 5 December as part of its second session on the regulation of the legal professions.
Meeting details
MPs on the cross-party committee will question representatives from The Law Society, Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and Legal Services Board.
A first session was held on Tuesday, 28 November with representatives from professional bodies including: the Bar Council, Bar Standards Board, CILEX (Chartered Institute of Legal Executives) and CILEx Regulation.
Likely areas of questioning
The Justice Committee will take evidence on a range of issues including: the performance of the regulators, the professional bodies’ relationships with the regulators, the legal and institutional framework that underpins regulation, the role of regulation in supporting access to justice, how to improve the service provided to consumers of legal services and the health of the professions.
Legal aid is outside of the scope of these sessions. The Committee is also not able to investigate individual or personal cases. The Committee last examined the regulation of legal services in June 2016.
