What are the health impacts of poor air quality—and do local authorities have enough powers to tackle it? EAC quizzes experts on outdoor air quality
The Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) will hold its first evidence session on air quality targets, gathering views from experts on outdoor air quality.
Meeting details
During the three-panel session, MPs will be exploring the health impact of poor air quality, the powers of local government to tackle the issue, and the impact on crop production.
The first panel, which includes a Professor from Imperial College London, a Professor from University of York and the special adviser to the Royal College of Physicians, will discuss questions on public health, and whether targets and monitoring are sufficient.
The second panel, with the Association of Directors of Public Health and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, will discuss with MPs issues concerning local government funding and powers and the efficacy of traffic control measures, such as London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).
Concluding the session, the third panel will focus on the effects of air quality on crop production, and ways to abate ammonia emissions. Representatives of the National Farmers Union and The Woodland Trust will answer questions on these topics.
