Modernisation of civil justice to be discussed at Justice Committee
The cross-party Justice Committee is to discuss the modernisation of the civil courts system in England and Wales, as well as access to justice, with its head, Sir Geoffrey Vos.
Sir Geoffrey is the second most senior judicial appointee after the Lord Chief Justice. He is the Head of Civil (as opposed to criminal) Justice and a judge of the Court of Appeal. His official title is Master of the Rolls, a position dating back to at least the thirteenth century which was originally related to keeping court ‘rolls’, or records. The post was held by Thomas Cromwell during the reign of Henry VIII.
Meeting details
Sir Geoffrey is a well-known proponent of the digitisation and modernisation of the courts. The public evidence session will consider how technology could lead to reforms in the civil justice system, including the potential use of artificial intelligence.
