MPs consider guideline on sentencing for multiple offences

The Justice Committee holds an evidence session with academics to inform recommendations it may make to the Sentencing Council on proposed changes to the ‘Totality Guideline’. The Council is undertaking a consultation on the Guideline, which provides guidance to judges on how to calculate the total length of a prison sentence where the person convicted has been found guilty of multiple offences.

The Sentencing Council is an independent Ministry of Justice body that issues guidelines on sentencing.

The session covers how the principles in the Guideline operate in practice and the changes the Sentencing Council is proposing to it.

The session also covers public understanding of the principles behind the idea of Totality. The Justice Committee is currently undertaking an inquiry into public opinion and understanding of sentencing.
