MPs explore environmental provisions of Indo-Pacific trade deal
MPs will explore the environmental provisions of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) at 10.00 on Wednesday 22 February.
The UK is currently committed to joining the CPTPP, a trade bloc consisting of Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam. According to recent statistics, CPTPP members account for 13 per cent of global domestic product (GDP) and 15 per cent of global trade.
Likely areas of questioning
In a session with experts, the International Trade Committee will examine the strength of the trade bloc’s environment chapter, including its provisions on fisheries subsidies, how the UK could cooperate on areas of environmental concern, and what the chapter means for UK businesses looking to trade in the region.
MPs will also examine how the bloc’s Environment Committee, the principal vehicle for cooperative efforts, operates.
