Meeting details

At 11:00am: Oral evidence
Inquiry The effectiveness of the institutions of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement

Sir John will answer questions from the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee on the significance of work in the early 1990s to establish the foundations for devolved government in Northern Ireland under the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement.

In December 1993, on the steps of No.10, Sir John and then Taoiseach Albert Reynolds announced their agreement on what became known as the Downing Street Declaration, calling it a “declaration for democracy and dialogue […] based on consent”.

This opened the way to further agreement on the Framework Documents in February 1995, outlining how Northern Ireland would be governed after hostilities ceased and proposing North/South and East/West cooperation bodies. These formed the basis of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement three years later.
