The Joint Committee on Human Rights continues its inquiry into the human rights of asylum seekers with an evidence session examining the support given to asylum seekers in the UK and the impact on local communities.
Meeting details
The Committee questions a representative of Refugee Action and a solicitor from DPG Law and Councillors from Glasgow, Kent, Newcastle and North Devon about human rights concerns relating to the provision of asylum support. Issues also examined include the quality of accommodation provided to asylum seekers, Government proposals to house claimants in alternative accommodation, including disused army bases and holiday camps, the provision of financial support, and the impact of restrictions on seeking work.
The Committee also looks at how asylum seekers are dispersed around the country and investigate the impact this has on the communities they are placed in and on the asylum seekers themselves.
