PROJECT FEATURES

1.       Website: HLF funding enabled the Group to enhance its website. The Group subsequently recieived an award for this from the Community Archives & Heritage Group of the Archives & Records Association (UK & Ireland).

2.       HLF evaluation below includes textual and illustrative detail.

3.       Work with schools and young people was emphasised. It included talks and discussion with Scarcroft Primary School pupils, and publication of Scarcroft School York in World War 1 based largely on the school's archives. At secondary level The Mount School and Millthorpe School prepared a  local WW1- themed trail, and contributed exhibitions of pupils' work at Clement Hall public events.  The Mount also exhibited work by pupils from a twinned school in Berlin, offering a comparative approach as to how the war was commemorated in  two combatant countries.

4.       The Group gained from collaboration with university public engagement centres. This took a variety of forms such as an introduction to the Liddle Collection at the Brotherton Library, University of Leeds by Professor Alison Fell from the Gateways to the First World War Centre. The project also benefited from input to a training workshop - on responses to conscription -  from the Everday Lives at War public engagement centre, University of Hertfordshire. Clements Hall Local History Group in turn contributed to workshops and exhibitions organised by Gateways Centre at the University of Kent, and and at the University of Leeds.

5.       Creation of resources: a wide range of learning materials can now be freely accessed via the website. These include publications; YouTube films; and blog posts.
