Written evidence from Parental Submission 10
- My Son has been attending main stream school in [town] [local authority]
- He needs a Statement or a EHC Plan so he gets the support he needs and the correct school
- He is struggling dueto the complex nature of actually being assesed
a) He is now 8 and still not been given a formal assessment
b) Limited funding of 1,5 hours’ additional support per week which isn’t enough
c) We have had rejection on his application due to milestones not being met by the school
d) All support functions are totally overwhelmed by requests
e) CAMS mental support – 6 months waiting list
f) Large classrooms which are inadequate to support him
- So the EHC Plan as it stands isn’t providing the level of support and it seems extremely hard to get him even assessed
- The provision is not acceptable and the local SEN schools are full to capacity
- The system is broken and these children are sitting in main stream schools falling behind
- The main concern is we need to act whilst they are in primary school care to try and elevate the other effects that inadequate support leads to when they reach puberty:
a) Truancy
b) Social withdrawal
c) Suicides
d) Bullying
e) Crime
- We need to address this so that we can place these children into environments that develop them and not exclude them from schooling
- Solutions:
a) Rapid Assessment Centres – children attend 3 days and needs are identified
b) Units adjacent to mainstream – this works well in Warwickshire integrated into mainstream
c) Team of professionals that want to support these cases
