My impression remains that the Government would benefit from a much better understanding that engineering is the application of science. The two are interdependent and engineering disciplines for turning ideas into things that work in practice are universally adaptable.
In looking for an explanation I note that membership of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) is predominantly academic without the balance of ‘application’ expertise. It is not helped that the role and value of engineering in our society tends to be overshadowed by a focus on science; so maybe it is time to remember the old adage: “ in theory it may work but in practice it is the practice which counts”?
