Written evidence submitted by Maentwrog Community Council (FNP 66)
These are some of the concerns of the Maentwrog Community Council :
DATE OF COMPLETION OF CARE & MAINTENANCE
The date for care & maintenance completion has never been adhered to - 2014 was one date given, then 2016 & now we have been told it would be 2021 to reach the stage of care & maintenance
Continually missing these targets proves that miscalculations seems to be acceptable, the costs if we are correct are over £1,000,000 per week to the taxpayer Are our future generations going to have to pay for the cost of decommissioning, maintenance and security up to the year 2095 when the Trawsfynydd site is scheduled to be returned as a green field site
The community council have asked that the site be returned to it's previous state as soon & safely as possible
LAKE CONTAMINATION:
The lake has & is being used for the disposal of contaminated waste, for safety reasons, there is an understanding that the level of the lake must remain above a certain limit so as not to expose radioactive particles in the silt to the air, another concern is that plutonium particles have been documented as present in the lake
ON SITE CONTAMINATION:
The cooling ponds have been leaking since the 1970's, questions were asked 10 yrs ago about this contamination, how deep & widespread the radioactivity had leaked into the ground, even now we are still awaiting results for bore-hole analysis ?
How long will it take to decontaminate the site ?
The environmental impact of Trawsfynydd Nuclear Power Station will be here for Generations to come
SMALL MODULAR REACTORS:
Since this type of reactor is in it's infancy and unproven : some of the comments relating to this ... " It is advantageous to place nuclear stations some distance away from population centres in order to minimise the potential human consequences of a major release of radioactive materials in the (extremely unlikely) event of a major Nuclear accident, not only in terms of direct exposure but concerning the management of emergency planning, notably evacuation"
INSTITUTION OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS " The UK Government, in collaboration with the Welsh Government, should support making the existing Nuclear licensed site at Trawsfynydd in North Wales available as a locations for the building and demonstration TESTING of a Small Modular Reactor
THE CONCLUSION OF THESE COMMENTS ARE THAT BECAUSE WE ARE RURAL WE ARE DISPENSABLE !! ??
EMPLOYMENT :
Employment and work in this area could & should be channelled towards alternative means of generating power and other clean industries
Nuclear Power leaves a legacy of vast costs and safety issues to the future generation for hundreds of years
Thank you for this opportunity to put forward some of our comments, the timescale was a bit short as it was the 19th February when we were informed that the deadline was in 2 weeks
which was quite short for a community council to respond.
