In looking at the future of General Practice there are a number of external factors that must be acknowledged when looking at a new model of care.

  1. The is scarcity of GPs
  2. Newer GPs are less interested in GP partnership but would prefer to practice as a medics
  3. The current management model in practices is inefficient and lacks the appropriate skills to run an effective small business
  4. Successful business all rely upon effective leadership

In order to address the above, I think that a radical new model needs to be explored where there is much more effective leadership in place and that this leader does not need to be medical in a practice. Ideally these organiations need both a CEO and COO type role but also that each of the partners needs to have much more clearly defined roles and responsibilities.
