Written evidence from Mrs C A Gulliford [HAB0241]
It is a fact that couples who marry are far more likely to stay together than couples who cohabit. Family breakdown is heart-breakingly costly to children and costly to the nation too. Marriage is a stabilizing building block of society and the chipping away at it undermines the very basis of our society. The government ought to be encouraging people to make lifelong commitments to each other in marriage. These proposals devalue and undermine marriage.
If there is misunderstanding about the respective rights of cohabitees and married couples, the solution surely is to make the matter plain; not simply to extend death benefits etc. to those who have decided not to make long term commitments. That is their choice and such people can provide for themselves through insurance policies and writing a will.
