Written evidence from Mr and Mrs Staples [HAB0185]
We ask the committee to consider the extra security offered by marriage rather than co-habitation. Affording equal rights to cohabitees undermines the option of marriage. It is a fact that cohabitees are much more likely to separate than married couples. This has a severe impact on the lives of children and stability in general of all communities. Giving cohabitees equal rights could lead to an increase in cohabitation with its detrimental effects on all individuals, particularly children, who above all else need a stable home environment.
