Written evidence from Mr Benjamin Epps, Longmeadow Evangelical Church [HAB0147]

Rather than give equivalent rights to cohabitees, the UK should promote the public commitment of marriage because each year, quite apart from the impact on mental health, parental separation costs our economy over £50 billion, and it’s much more likely for those who cohabit (>50%) compared to those who are married (15%).

Also, the law already has sufficient provision for cohabiting couples (e.g. inheritance rights can be clarified through writing a will), so we should not make unnecessary legal changes that reduce public awareness of the benefits of marriage.
