Written evidence from Davies [HAB0143]

I am writing as a Christian who has been married for almost 50 years. I believe that this is the ideal relationship to bring children up in. Much research shows that parental separation is higher for cohabitation than for marriage and family breakdown is very expensive for society. It has also been shown that marriage benefits physical and mental health.

When a couple choose to get married, then they are making a lifelong commitment to each other and this gives legal protection to a surviving spouse. I do not think that the same provision should be made for cohabiting couples as this undermines marriage and offers benefits to those who choose not to make such a commitment.

I believe that the government should be raising awareness of the benefits of getting married and the legal problems associated with cohabiting. Making a legal change would blur the lines and reduce public awareness of the many benefits of marriage.
