Written evidence from Dr Phil Jones [HAB0109]

There has been a shift away from traditional marriage towards cohabitation. However, the shift is not neutral. The committee should not treat this matter as though it were simply a preferred way of couples making a life together. When couples marry they make a public commitment that include promise that they intend keeping. This shows good intent and provides a basis for a stable family environment. Ending a marriage is complex and this deters couples from ending the relationship for trivial reasons. If cohabiting couples are given all the rights afforded married couples then there will be fewer reasons for making a lifelong relationship. The result will be more broken, dysfunctional families. Please do not make cohabiting equal to marriage.
