Written evidence from Paul Quayle [HAB0064]
This proposal seems to emphasize the rights of co-habitees while ignoring those of married couples or those in a civil partnership. If co-habitees can’t be bothered to marry or register a partnership, why should they gain “rights” at all?
The downside of these proposals is that they further erode the institution of marriage by treating it as the same as any casual relationship. Much evidence points to the success of marriage as a stable family unit for children, unlike other relationships. This an area to stop adding yet more legislation. So sad that a Conservative government is even considering this.
