Letter from Julian Knight MP, Chair, Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee to
Peter Leathem, CEO, PPL

Peter Leathem

Chief Executive Office

Phonographic Performance Limited

19 April 2021

Dear Mr Leathem,

Request for additional statistics for our Report

Thank you for giving evidence to the Committee earlier this year. Your insights about internet radio licencing, market competition and the Momentum Fund have been useful contributions to our work.

In the process of producing our Report, we have identified several areas where we lack necessary information for evidenced analysis. This information would provide some useful context to the impact of music streaming on the music industry.

We wish to know year-on-year trends in:

1.       Commercial radio revenue

2.       TV broadcast revenue

3.       Public performance and so-called ‘dubbing’ revenue

Where possible, we would require data from the last fifteen years (i.e. since the advent of streaming during the peak digital piracy period) and in both nominal and real terms.

We understand that specific figures may be sensitive, though we also committed to ensuring that our work is undertaken in an open and transparent manner. As such, we would appreciate if as much information was supplied publicly as possible so that it can be referred to in our Report.

To ensure we can Report in a timely manner, we request that this information be supplied to us in writing by Monday 26 April.

Yours sincerely,

Julian Knight MP

Chair, Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee
