Written evidence submitted by Mr Geoff Whittaker (RSM0070)
My understanding is that the original scheme of the smart motorways programme had emergency laybyes every 500metres. I understand that following schemes have emergency laybyes at longer distances between them.
I wonder if the committee has been provided with the safety audit for the original scheme and those for following schemes if the distance between emergency laybyes has been increased. This might give the committee an insight into the thought process of increasing the distances and how that should have affected safety if any.
It might be appropriate for the committee to ask for accident data which refers to the original scheme and following schemes.
