Written evidence submitted by Dr Trevor Baxter [GRA0381]
I oppose the suggested change to the GRA act o the grounds that gender is not self-defined but inescapably linked to birth sex. In other words, trans-women are not women, but men who have wish to live as women, some of whom will have registered under the existing GRA act.
Provisions made by the Equality Acts protecting women (sex is a protected characteristic) are undermined and make no sense if the term ‘woman’ can be self-defined.
Those who wish to transition should be allowed to do so, but only with the professional medical opinion and two year’s wait as required by the present GRA act.
