Understanding Biofilms and NBIC’s Role in Innovation

Biofilms are complex communities of microorganisms that adhere to surfaces and play a crucial role across multiple sectors, including healthcare, manufacturing, food safety, and water treatment. While biofilms contribute to challenges such as antimicrobial resistance and industrial biofouling, they also present opportunities for groundbreaking innovations in biotechnology, sustainability, and materials science. Biofilms have a significant impact across multiple sectors, with an estimated global economic footprint exceeding $5 trillion annually.

The National Biofilms Innovation Centre (NBIC) was established in 2017 as the UK’s leading centre for biofilm research and innovation. Funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and Innovate UK, NBIC brings together world-class interdisciplinary expertise from the Universities of Edinburgh, Liverpool, Nottingham, and Southampton, and a further 59 Universities from across the UK.

NBIC's mission is to connect biofilm specialists across the UK, fostering collaborations between academic researchers and industry partners to address unmet needs in biofilm research and innovation. By uniting over 300 businesses and leading experts, NBIC aims to transform biofilm research into practical solutions that tackle global challenges such as antimicrobial resistance, food safety, and water security.
