Written evidence submitted by Dr Jonathan Bayes

Although my wife and I have never ourselves chosen the path of home education for any of our three children, we have quite a number of friends who have done so. We believe that this is a decision which all parents must make for themselves and their family, and that the current acknowledgement in law that it is parents and not the state who have the ultimate responsibility for the education of their children is absolutely right. I would not therefore be in favour of a statutory requirement for the registration of home educated children, nor that inspection of home education should be required. To impose such measures would be an infringement of parental responsibility.
