His Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Authorities is responsible for ensuring the inspection of police forces and fire & rescue authorities, and reporting publicly on their efficiency and effectiveness.

The role is subject to pre-appointment scrutiny by the Home Affairs Committee before any appointment by Ministers. The Committee will hold a pre-appointment hearing with the Government’s preferred candidate, and then publish a report saying whether it endorses the appointment.
