Puppy smuggling and live animal exports: Ministers to be questioned

24 June 2021

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Select Committee is to hold its final evidence session of its inquiry into Moving animals across borders.

Likley topics for discussion

In this session, MPs question Defra Minister Lord Benyon on evidence heard so far regarding the movement of pets, equines and agricultural animals between the UK and the EU following the end of the transition period.

Likely topics for discussion include recent Government announcements of new restrictions on puppy smuggling, and whether these go far enough, and if current and future rules will be properly enforced.

The Committee is also likely to press on the new barriers to moving animals between Great Britain and Northern Ireland as a result of Brexit, and the Government’s proposals to ban live animal exports for slaughter and fattening.
