This session is to explore NHS pilots - the primary mechanism for testing new models and approaches in real-world settings before wider adoption. Pilots are central to the NHS’s ambition to innovate, “taking the best of the NHS to the rest”, as set out in the Ten-Year Plan.

 

Pilots provide an essential bridge between policy ambition and practical delivery, enabling evidence-based decisions on what works. They allow the system to trial innovative solutions, gather insights, and refine approaches before committing to large-scale implementation. However, despite positive evaluations, some pilots struggle to scale and embed into routine practice. This session will examine why that happens and identify common challenges that hinder progress.
