Reviewing the electricity market

Inquiry

The Committee is inquiring into what reforms are needed to the UK electricity market to enable the transition to clean, lower cost energy by 2030.

After long consultation, the Government indicated last year that it does not intend to undertake wholesale reform toward a model of locational pricing. But it has not set out its thinking or research on the range of possible individual reforms to the current system, that could break down some of the blocks and inefficiencies in the current market (see the Committee’s ongoing inquiry on the Cost of Energy for more work on those).

Progressive vs wholesale reform

The Committee is now inviting evidence on the range of possible reforms open to Government to implement and their impacts on reaching the UK’s twin goals of 95% clean energy generation by 2030 and bringing down energy bills.

This inquiry is no longer accepting evidence

The deadline for submissions was 11:59pm on 27 March 2026.
