The Public Accounts Committee will be following up recent scrutiny with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in autumn 2025, on various topics.
The PAC’s July 2025 report on Jobcentres warned that government seemed complacent at the potential impact of a reduction in support for benefit claimants. Amid a shortfall of work coaches, and third-sector organisations raising concerns with the inquiry about the quality and consistency of the support offered, the PAC was not convinced by the DWP’s assurances that it should not be concerned about the reduction of this support.
The PAC’s January 2025 report into the DWP’s customer service and accounts for 2023-24 found that the service provided to customers was a mixed bag, with disability benefits claimants were found to have received an unacceptably poor level of service, with fraud levels also remaining high.
The report also raised concerns about the potential negative impact on protected groups and vulnerable customers of DWP's use of machine learning to identify potential fraud, and sought reassurance from government that claimants were not being treated unfairly through its use.
