The work of the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills (Ofsted)

Non-inquiry session

Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills. Its role is to inspect and report on educational institutions, including schools, nurseries, and childminders, aiming to provide information for parents, promote improvement, and hold schools accountable. As a non-ministerial government department, Ofsted is accountable to parliament and subject to annual scrutiny by the Education Select Committee.

The Committee will hear from His Majesty’s Chief Inspector (HMCI) who is statutorily responsible for Ofsted’s inspection and regulatory work. He is responsible to both the Ofsted Board and to Parliament for the organisation, staffing and management of Ofsted, and for ensuring the efficient and effective use of resources.
