Bern Convention funding

European scrutiny

The Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats (the Bern Convention) is a binding international legal instrument for nature conservation.   Its funding has been decreasing over the last decade, so   the Bern Standing Committee is considering two future funding options: mandatory contributions from all Parties; and a two-tier arrangement requiring countries opting-in to sign a new agreement to make mandatory contributions.

We are writing to the Minister to find out what policy position the UK would take  at the Standing Committee meeting , what assessment it has made of the impact of the reduced funding on the scale and effectiveness of the Bern Convention’s activities, and what will be done in the short term, before a new funding model is established, to ensure that the Convention’s work continues and remains effective.
