Energy bills for domestic customers

Inquiry

** Following the announcement that a General Election will be held on 4 July, Select Committees will be unable to meet from 24 May and will cease to exist from 30 May until after the General Election. This work has therefore closed.**

The Committee has launched an inquiry which will investigate the process of billing customers for their gas and electricity, looking at whether the rules on charging for energy are fair for all.

The inquiry’s proposed aims are:

  • To determine whether the rules on billing are fair to all consumers;
  • To understand what goes into the standing charge and whether that results in a fair contribution from all customers;
  • To explore the pre-payment issues and what restrictions there should be on energy companies utilising that tool.
  • To determine how a social tariff might address inequalities in the process.
