In May 2022 the Committee concluded that there were systemic failures of intelligence, diplomacy, planning and preparation in the UK Government’s handling of its withdrawal from Afghanistan. In the Government’s response, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) acknowledged that there were “fundamental lessons to learn” from the withdrawal, and that it was “determined to raise standards” in preparing for and responding to future crises.
The Foreign Affairs Committee is today issuing a call for written evidence on the Government’s continuing response to the Afghanistan withdrawal and progress in implementing the Committee’s recommendations within its report “Missing in action: UK leadership and the withdrawal from Afghanistan”, published in May 2022.
The Committee intends to hold an evidence session on 17 October marking one year since the Government’s response to the Committee’s report.
