Energy suppliers are legally obliged to meet bespoke annual individual minimum smart meter installation targets for domestic and small business customers in Great Britain in the period from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2025.
At the end of December 2022, 55% of all meters were smart, meaning they can provide near-real time information to suppliers on energy usage and enable households to track the cost of their energy usage using an in-home display.
While the deployment of smart meters is carried out by energy suppliers, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has ultimate responsibility for the programme.
Based on an investigation into the rollout by the National Audit Office the Public Accounts Committee will question consumer representatives and senior officials at DESNZ and the energy sector regulator Ofgem on the latter stages of the rollout, how to ensure benefits are maximised, and that the programme delivers value for money.
In particular it will examine:
- how well the rollout has progressed to date
- whether DESNZ is effectively ensuring the programme’s potential benefits are explored, tracked and delivered
- how well DESNZ is set up to deliver the remainder of the programme.
If you have evidence on these issues please submit it here by 23:59 on Wednesday 7 June.
Please look at the requirements for written evidence submissions and note that the Committee cannot accept material as evidence that is published elsewhere.
