European scrutiny

The EU’s Regulation on Organic Production sets out the rules for organic production and the labelling of organic products. It introduces a number of changes to the EU’s existing organics regulatory regime, and this amending Regulation delays those changes by one year in light of pressures on the industry arising from COVID-19.  This Regulation applies to Northern Ireland by virtue of the Northern Ireland Protocol.

We are writing to the Minister to raise concerns about the ability of Great Britain’s organics producers to continue exporting their products, marketed as organic, to the EU and Northern Ireland after 1 January 2021. We are asking for an update on the negotiations for a UK-EU organics equivalence agreement and if there is none suggest that UK control bodies will need to be recognised by the EU for this trade to continue.
