Committee to discuss digital technology and the delivery of healthcare services

The COVID-19 Committee will hear from the British Medical Association, Healthwatch England, The King’s Fund and Professor Ruth Chambers to explore how an increasing reliance on digital technology might change how health services are accessed and delivered and what that might mean for our physical health.
During the session, the Committee is hoping to learn about the extent to which more health services are being delivered online as a result of the COVID pandemic and whether this will lead to a long-term trend towards digital healthcare. The Committee is also interested in understanding the opportunities offered by digital technology to develop new services that may be more effective, efficient or accessible.

- Chris McCann, Director of Communications, Insight and Campaigns for Healthwatch England, the independent national champion for people who use health and social care services;
- Pritesh Mistry, Policy Fellow for Digital Technology at The King’s Fund, an independent, charitable organisation that works to improve health and care in England; and
- Professor Ruth Chambers OBE, Staffordshire Sustainability and Transformation Partnership’s clinical lead for technology enabled care services programme and digital workstream.

- The role of digital technology in delivering healthcare services before and during the pandemic, and the likely future trends;
- The long-term impact of digital technology on the delivery of healthcare services;
- Opportunities to develop new, digital services that may be more effective, efficient and accessible;
- The risks, if any, of providing more healthcare services digitally;
- Any additional training required to ensure that both the current, and future, healthcare workforce has the necessary skills to work digitally;
- The impact of offering more services digitally on patients’ outcomes and experiences; and
- Specific groups that may struggle to access digital healthcare services, and the steps required to ensure that all patients can access digital healthcare services.
